The Automation Systems Group (ASG) as part of the Institute of Computer Aided Automation, Faculty of Informatics, focuses on research in various topics related to distributed automation systems. Particular focus is put on home and building automation and their integration into the Internet/Web of Things (IoT/WoT). In addition, program analysis for real-time programs, formal methods for control systems and automation network security and safety are investigated. Current research topics at the group range from the comprehensive integration of heterogeneous (building) automation systems to smart home environments and applications. Within building automation, focus is put on the analysis and use of open standards, such as BACnet, KNX, LonWorks, IEEE 802.15.4, ZigBee, or 6LoWPAN, and automation systems integration based on management level approaches (Web Services and Service oriented Architectures resting upon e.g. OBIX, OPC UA, BACnet/WS). In this context, information modeling approaches with respect to machine-readable semantics and abstraction from heterogeneous technologies in the field and automation levels are developed. Applications of these integration and modeling efforts are, for example, better utilization of building automation for enhanced energy efficient operation in smart homes and smart buildings. In parallel, research and development efforts tackle cyber physical production systems and the area of ‘Industrial Internet’.

Wolfgang Kastner is the head of the Automation Systems Group at the Technische Universität Wien. His research specializes in the development of control networks and distributed automation systems with a specific focus on industrial, home and building automation systems, and smart grids, including aspects of safety and security. He is actively involved in the development of approaches and techniques for secure and reliable cyber-physical production systems, smart buildings, and smart grids, and their integration into the Internet of Things. He is also currently supervising three specialized labs that address security, robotics, and automation in distributed systems. He has contributed as a program committee member to numerous conferences and workshops, formed the Home and Building Automation Research Cluster, and founded the EEE Industrial Electronics Society Technical Committee for Building Automation, Control and Management (IEEE-IES TC BACM).

The physical world and its virtual representation are increasingly converging, which leads to Cyber-Physical Production Systems (CPPS) in the manufacturing environment. CPPS synergize conventional production technology as well as ICT, allowing machines and products to exchange information, trigger actions and control other components autonomously. Therefore, seamless communication between physical objects of the shop floor and various computer systems is required. The Reference Architecture Model Industrie 4.0 (RAMI4.0) provided by the Plattform Industrie 4.0 specifies requirements for CPPS consisting of Industrie 4.0-components. In such systems, a major goal is to enable communication of I4.0 components among each other via industrial networks. For this purpose, RAMI4.0 suggests that each component has a virtual representation and uses Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) based communication with I4.0-semantics. This paper describes a systematic approach to OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) information model for representing the static and dynamic behavior of manufacturing systems. Moreover, the approach is generic in the sense that it can be used to define information models for multiple target technologies, such as OPC UA, MTConnect and others. It even allows to reuse large parts of the generated models for similar manufacturing utilities and various target technologies. Therefore, we first present a concept for system analysis and design by using the Unified Modeling Language (UML), which is widely accepted for interdisciplinary work. The information gathered is then transformed to OPC UA information models which serves as target technology in this paper. The purpose of this approach is to simplify the process of defining virtual representations of manufacturing systems. Applying the presented concept allows transformation of classic manufacturing systems into CPPS with SOA-based communication and semantically rich virtual representations of individual components. It is therefore well suited to meet the requirements specified by RAMI4.0.}"

By the future establishment of the Internet of Things in this area with numerous IPv6-based end devices, the degree of automation and the resulting complexity will further raise. Besides highly efficient control and maintenance strategies, use case sce- narios like demand side management, load shifting, and energy feedback are future goals of building management systems. Meantime, OPC Unified Architecture (OPC UA) is accepted as communication solution, especially because of its capabilities to create extensible information models. As part of the ongoing research project OPC4Factory, semantically rich OPC UA interfaces based on specific information models for a robotized manufacturing cell are developed. In addition to the static hierarchical structure, the information model should also describe the dynamic behavior of the modeled system. State machines provide proven means to model the dynamic behavior of manufacturing machines. However, whether a transition of a state machine can be executed often depends on certain conditions. In UML, these conditions are reflected by guards. Unfortunately, a similar functionality is neither provided by the current OPC UA specification nor by companion standards. For this reason, an amendment to the OPC UA information model is introduced, enabling guards in OPC UA. Thereby, new object and reference types allow to model operations in an OPC UA server’s address space. Exposing this information has several advantages over hiding it in the server’s source code regarding the required implementation effort as well as the client’s possibilities to react to rejected transition requests.}",

By now, first steps towards information models for KNX have been made. This preliminary work will be enhanced by integrating meta information into the existing model. Since an information model only gives a description about the general scheme how KNX process data (i.e. KNX function blocks, group addresses, etc.) are represented and accessible, it cannot state any thing about the actual configuration of a distinct installation. Therefore, the types defined in KNX/OPC UA information model need to be instantiated in a way such that they map the actual configuration of the target KNX network.     	abstract = "The Building Automation and Control Network Protocol (BACnet) has been developed to provide a solution for building automation and control systems of all sizes and types. While BACnet specifies an application model as well as different routing services, the underlying network medium is not defined. BACnet messages can, in principle, be conveyed over any network. However, a number of network types are recommended in the BACnet standard. Since KNX with all its benefits has not been considered as a network medium for BACnet, we provide an approach that uses KNX TP 1 as network medium for BACnet.     	abstract = "The core application area of KNX is environmental control with the traditional service types lighting/shading and Heating, Ventilation and Air conditioning (HVAC). Extending KNX towards new application areas leads to increasing demands. This is especially true for the integration of applications from the security domain (e.g., access control and security alarm systems). They require the underlying control system to be reliable and robust against malicious manipulations (security attacks) to fulfil their purpose. For this reason, it is necessary to protect the exchanged process data (secure group communication) as well as prevent unauthorized use of the management services which are used for configuration and maintenance purposes (secure management communication). Since KNX was not designed for use in security critical environments, a security extension to KNX called EIBsec has been developed. EIBsec supports mechanisms to guarantee data confidentiality, integrity and freshness as well as an authentication service. Relevant configuration related issues such as key management and distribution are also addressed. An important feature of EIBsec is compatibility to standard KNX technology.",

Today such systems typically follow a two-layered hierarchical approach. While control networks interconnect distributed sensors, actuators and controllers, a backbone provides the necessary infrastructure for management tasks hosted by configuration and management devices. In addition, devices interconnecting the control network with the backbone and the backbone with further networks (e.g., the Internet) play a strategic role. All BAS devices contributing to a particular functionality differ in their requirements for hardware.
